Katy Perry..........................Katy Perry original name Katheryn Elizabeth Hudson, (born October 25 1984 Santa Barbara California U.S.) American pop singer who gained fame for a string of anthemic and often sexually suggestive hit songs as well as for a playfully cartoonish sense of style. Perry's efforts to achieve popularity in the mainstream were unsuccessful. Before any new material could even be put out two labels had signed and removed Perry. Capitol Records, however, released Perry's Ur So Gay album in 2007, which received moderate success for the album's title track. "I kissed a Girl a straightforward ode that expresses sexual desire accompanied by the beat of a hardedged electropop made her a larger splash within a couple of months. I Kissed a Girls was an immediate hit, however the song quickly caused controversy. Critics argued that it encouraged sexual relationships between gay and straight men, and others felt that the story which was depicted on the album was more appealing to fantasies of males. I Kissed a Girl was an instant hit on Perry's The One of the Boys in 2008, thanks to the combination of excitement and melody. Its bouncy, sharp-tongued and bouncy second single Hot N Cold also proving to be a hit, the album that Perry composed herself, eventually saw sales of more than three million copies within the United States.
